Soutos Vivos: replanting chestnut groves after the 2017 wildfires

Soutos Vivos' para luchar contra los incendios

Equipo Editorial Hifas |

This campaign took place in 2017–2018 and is now closed.

The wave of wildfires that devastated more than 49,000 hectares of Galicia in 2017 affected everyone who cares about our land. At Hifas da Terra we believe the best way to restore the hillsides is not by planting unproductive or invasive species, but by surrounding rural communities with productive crops and native trees. That idea gave rise to the Soutos Vivos ('Living Chestnut Groves') campaign.

Through the Hifas Foundation, we donated 100 mycorrhizal chestnut trees – inoculated with porcini (Boletus edulis) – to help reforest areas affected by the fires, and invited the public to join by sponsoring additional trees. Mycorrhizal chestnut groves allow multi-purpose use of the land: chestnuts, porcini and quality timber.

The trees were allocated by an expert committee according to the suitability of each site, and our forestry team provided technical advice to landowners to ensure successful planting.

Thank you to everyone who took part in helping to turn a landscape of ash into a green future, with chestnuts and porcini.
