Marta Hifas |

Researchers, health professionals and technicians of the Galician food industry collaborate in a pioneering study that aims to develop a functional food that prevents or slows cognitive deterioration, one of the main health problems in elderly people. In the Neurofood project, products of great nutritional value such as mushrooms, chests and algae are studied, in which the Galician firms do Terra, the Cuevas and Algamar group, respectively.

«The objective of the project is to obtain functional foods that allow preventing or slowing cognitive deterioration», explains Esteban Sonde, scientific and co -founder director of Hifas da Terra, promoter of the study. After remembering that every year about 40,000 new cases of Alzheimer's are diagnosed in Spain, says Sinde that "There is the conviction that leading healthy lifestyle could reduce up to 40% cases of this disease".

He adds that one of the fundamental health problems of today's society is neurodegeneration, since it has many associated diseases and in some countries it causes more mortality in advanced age than cancer. And it is that people with dementia have difficulty performing breathing or swallowing.
