Ötzi, the oldest mummy in Europe and the healing power of mushrooms

Ötzi, la momia más antigua de Europa y el poder curativo de las setas

Marta Hifas |

Ötzi is the oldest natural human mummy. He lived in the Italian Alps, around 3300 a. C. Ötzi measured approximately 159 cm high, was about 46 years old, and had weighed about 50 kg. He had arthritis in his joints, and suffered from intestinal parasites.

Ötzi was perfectly dressed, with cape, vest and special snow shoes, with soft herbs that surrounded the feet that made the function of the socks. In addition to an ax, knives, arrows and an arc higher than it, among the possessions Ötzi were several species of mushrooms. One of these Piptoporus Betulinus (Birch fungus) has antibacterial characteristics, and was probably used for medical purposes. Another was a guy Fomes fomentarius, of Yesca fungus (to produce fire), included with part of what seemed to be a complex equipment. The team contains pieces of various plants, about a dozen, in addition to flint and pyrite to create sparks.

His discovery for Swiss mountaineers has allowed us to know a lot about our own history and, what is very interesting for those who adore mycology, about medicinal use and for the survival of mushrooms. The use of mushrooms by the ancient Chinese emperors is known worldwide, but little has been talked about this issue in Europe, and thanks to Ötzi we know that we also have ancestors who have studied the healing power of mushrooms.

Greetings and have a very good week.
